Understand First, Judge Later: Riza Mahardika on Peace at Work and Online

Lecturer Riza Mahardika shares four everyday practices for bringing peaceful, respectful interaction to workplaces and digital spaces.

Peace is needed not only in physical spaces but also in digital spaces and professional ecosystems. This is the principle that Riza Mahardika, S.Sos., M.Med.Kom., a practitioner lecturer and digital marketing professional, puts into practice every day. She described these practices in her application to the I TEACH PEACE Champions Fellowship.

Although her work centers mostly on digital and business, Riza says she always weaves principles of peaceful social interaction and values formation into everything she does. She sums them up in four practices.

## Four Everyday Practices

First, she builds communication norms grounded in respect, empathy, and inclusive language, whether leading team discussions, running workshops, or engaging on social media. In the online discussion groups she facilitates for students and professionals, she stresses one principle: understand first, then judge or decide.

"This principle matters because it reduces conflict and encourages shared understanding instead of reactive responses. As a result, dialogue becomes more inclusive, critical thinking improves, and divisions within the group decrease," Riza explained.

Second, as a practitioner lecturer, she teaches digital literacy that covers ethical behavior, responsible engagement, and sharing information without harming others. She shows students and colleagues how unchecked narratives can fuel tension, so they get used to questioning assumptions and putting context ahead of sensationalism.

Third, on social media, Riza deliberately frames topics constructively. For example, when discussing barriers to fair opportunity in Indonesia, such as the difficulty of entering the job market, she also offers solutions that emphasize collaboration and shared progress.

Fourth, in leading teams, she encourages shared accountability and conflict-reducing frameworks, built on clear communication and a common understanding of goals.

## From Transactional to a Learning Space

According to Riza, these simple practices have brought real change to the work culture and digital spaces she manages. "Interactions that used to be transactional have become spaces where learning, dignity, and constructive debate can go hand in hand," she said.

She invites educators, team leaders, and social media practitioners to start with what is closest: how we speak and how we listen. "Peace can be practiced. Start by listening before judging," she said.
