Three ways to close a door: the goodbye songs of Mike Sain't Louis

A spoken letter that will never be sent, a farewell reduced to a handful of words and a song about the old age that was promised and never arrived. A look at how Planeta Gayfolk says goodbye, free to hear at mikesaintlouis.com/descargas.

MADRID, Spain, October 24, 2026. Pop music has said goodbye in thousands of ways, from tearful ballads to slammed-door anthems. The catalogue of Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer who created Planeta Gayfolk, contains its own collection of farewells, and what is striking about them is how different they are from each other. Some are long and reasoned. Some are almost silent. Some are angry at a future that was stolen. Together they form a short course in the many shapes an ending can take.

This release looks at three of them, chosen because each closes the door in a different way.

The letter that is not meant to be read: «La última carta»

«La última carta», "The last letter", is one of the most unusual pieces in the catalogue because it is not built from verses at all. It is written as prose, a letter delivered in full, and it opens by refusing the very thing letters usually ask for: «No escribo esto para volver a hablar contigo». I am not writing this to talk to you again. I do not need your answer or your attention.

What follows is a precise account of a relationship marked by manipulation, told from the far side of it. The narrator remembers doubting his own reactions and limits, being told he was exaggerating, too sensitive, that everything was a misunderstanding. Then comes the turn, in three words that stand alone on a line: «Fuiste tú», it was you.

The letter does not end in rage. It ends in a kind of hard-won serenity. «Hoy no te odio, no te deseo mal, no me interesa tu versión», today I don't hate you, I don't wish you harm, I'm not interested in your version. The peace, the narrator explains, comes from the cut, from blocking and silence. One sentence has become a favourite among listeners: «Hoy la dignidad pesa más que la nostalgia», today dignity weighs more than nostalgia.

And the closing section explains who the letter is really for: «Esta carta no es para que la leas. Es para que yo cierre». It is not for you to read; it is so that I can close. Mike has spoken publicly about his recovery from years of narcissistic abuse and about writing as the place where he could finally tell his side. «La última carta» may be the purest expression of that idea: a text addressed to the person who caused the harm, but written entirely for the person healing from it.

The farewell in a few words: «Hoy es el último adiós»

At the opposite extreme sits «Hoy es el último adiós», "Today is the last goodbye". If the letter needs hundreds of words, this song needs only a handful. «yo solo he venido a decirte que hoy / es el último adiós», I have only come to tell you that today is the last goodbye. Then the phrase is broken apart, word by word, each one placed on its own line, until only the essential remains: «El último adiós / Adiós».

The minimalism is the message. After everything that has been said, argued and explained, there is nothing left to add. The song is the sound of someone who has stopped negotiating. There is no recrimination and no list of reasons, only the announcement that the time has come. Many listeners recognise in it the exhaustion of a long ending, when even anger has run out and what remains is a simple, quiet decision.

The future that was promised: «Envejecer»

The third goodbye is addressed less to a person than to a dream. «Envejecer», "To grow old", begins with a long, stretched cry of refusal, «Ya Noooooooooooo», and a vow that sounds definitive: the narrator will never trust anyone again.

The reason arrives in one of the most painful lines in the catalogue: «¿Por qué me preguntabas si me imaginaba los dos viejitos cogidos de la mano?» Why did you ask me if I imagined the two of us as little old men holding hands? The image is tender, the kind of shared fantasy that couples whisper to each other, and the song reveals that it was offered while a betrayal was happening at the same time.

The structure of the lyric mirrors the shock. The question is broken into lone words, one per line, as if the narrator could only process it slowly. «Envejecer» is a goodbye to the idea of growing old together, and to the trust that made that idea possible. It is the rawest of the three, and the least resolved, which is precisely why it belongs in the sequence.

A small grammar of endings

Read in order, the three songs describe the stages through which many endings pass. «Envejecer» is the wound, the moment the promised future collapses. «La última carta» is the understanding, when the facts finally line up and the person can say what happened. «Hoy es el último adiós» is the decision, when words are no longer necessary.

None of them is a song about wanting someone back. That is perhaps what unites them most clearly with the rest of Planeta Gayfolk, a universe that keeps choosing the narrator's freedom over the comfort of the old story.
