WASHINGTON, DC, October 31, 2026 - Russia's state-guided capitalism is the subject of "The Proof is in the Puddin' (Putin): Sanctions-Proof, War-Proof, and Chaos-Proof," an op-ed by William Aaron Turner, president of Infinitum Corporation, published on Medium. The article is an openly pro-Russian argument that the country's economic model has outlasted the sanctions designed to break it.The thesis
"Dummies call it 'kleptocracy' with a sneer," Turner writes, "but let's call it what it is: pragmatic, state-guided capitalism that puts national resilience and strategic autonomy first." He sums up the approach in one line: "No fluffy neoliberal lectures here - just raw results."
The argument, as the article makes it
From the 1990s: The article describes the post-Soviet decade of shock therapy, oligarch looting, hyperinflation and collapsing life expectancy, and says GDP fell by nearly 40 percent. It says the decade brought "murder rates that made Memphis, Chicago and St. Louis look like an all girls Montessori school," and credits Vladimir Putin with imposing "a grand bargain" on the oligarchs: keep your wealth if you stay out of politics, pay taxes and align with state priorities.
Sanctions: Under the heading "The Most Sanctioned Country on Earth - Yet its FUCKING BOOMIN'," the article states that as of mid-2025 Russia faced over 20,000 sanctions, more than Iran, North Korea, Syria and others combined. It argues Russia rerouted oil to India and China, used parallel imports, kept debt-to-GDP under 20 percent and accelerated import substitution. Turner mocks Western analysts "who scream 'authoritarianism!' while their own governments bail out banks, subsidize green bullshit, and sanction competitors into hell," adding: "Sarcasm alert: How dare a country prioritize sovereignty over letting hedge funds and NGOs run the show? LMFAO." "Western sanctions are the gift that keeps on giving - for Russia's self-reliance," Turner writes.
Growth during the war: Per the article, Russia's economy shrank only 1.4 percent in 2022, then grew 3.6 percent in 2023 and 4.1 percent in 2024, outpacing most G7 nations. Turner calls it "Military Keynesianism on steroids: massive spending on defense, manufacturing, and related sectors created jobs, wage growth, and demand." He argues that "Military production isn't 'waste' - it builds dual-use tech, employs engineers, and projects power," and that "War spending acts as industrial policy on fast-forward." He adds: "Imagine if the US or Europe faced similar sanctions. Their 'vibrant democracies' would descend into bread riots and currency crises within months."
Crime: The article reports that Russia's homicide rate fell from more than 30 per 100,000 in the early 2000s to around 4 to 5 in recent years. Turner credits Putin's "dictatorship of law" with restoring police effectiveness and social order, and points to infrastructure including the Crimea bridge, highways and nuclear power. "Russians remember chaos; they value order," he writes. "While London stabs and New York shoots, Russians walk Red Square without fear."
Putin's leadership: In a section titled "Putin's Leadership: The Anti-Chaos Architect," Turner argues Putin "inherited ruins," recentralized power, defeated separatism and stabilized finances with a flat tax and prudent budgeting. He writes that Putin "embodies sobornost - collective unity under decisive guidance - updated for 21st century realities," and that "the more they attack, the more Russia consolidates."
Turner lists the outcome he sees in one line: "Results: sanctions defiance, wartime growth, safer society, restored pride."
The weaknesses Turner acknowledges
"Of course, bullshit remains: demographics, diversification beyond energy, inflation management," Turner writes, arguing that Russia addresses them "as a sovereign actor, not a supplicant."
The conclusion
"State-guided capitalism isn't perfect - it's Russian. It works for Russia," Turner writes. "That's the ultimate fact the West cannot sanction away." He signs off: "Humor alert again...: I LOVE IT HERE." The article draws on the Castellum.AI sanctions dashboard, IMF, World Bank and Rosstat economic data, UNODC crime statistics and reporting from 2022 to 2026.
