Media Double Standard: William Aaron Turner's Missiles, Murders and Media Compares Coverage of Ukraine and U.S. City Violence

Media double standard: William Aaron Turner's op-ed contrasts Western coverage of the war in Ukraine with silence on homicides in U.S. cities.

WASHINGTON, DC, October 31, 2026 - The Western media double standard is the subject of "Missiles, Murders and Media: A Tale of Two Warzones," an op-ed by William Aaron Turner, president of Infinitum Corporation, published on Medium. The article contrasts the global attention given to Russia's Special Military Operation in Ukraine with the limited attention given to violence in American cities.

The question

Under the opening heading "Lil' Durk Vs. Rachmaninoff," Turner describes how a missile strike in Eastern Europe becomes a global moral emergency: "Fuckfaces on CNN who pronounce 'Kyiv' with performative precision, hashtags from Hollywood celebrities who couldn't locate Donbas on a map if their private jets depended on it, emergency UN sessions filled with righteous indignation from nations that bomb weddings in the Middle East without blinking." A shooting in Chicago, by contrast, he says becomes "a local news segment placed between the weather forecast" and the sports scores.

"This contrast raises a very fucking uncomfortable question that the Western establishment desperately avoids," Turner writes: why the West devotes "so much frantic attention, so many billions in aid, and so much narrative firepower" to the war in Ukraine while "showing comparatively little urgency toward the chronic violence, drug-fueled annihilation, and social collapse devouring entire neighborhoods in its own cities."

"The question is not intended to minimize the impact or war. War is ugly. Death is ugly," he writes. "The point is consistency." In Turner's words, "If human life is sacred, as the West loves to sermonize, then human life should be sacred everywhere."

The numbers the article sets side by side

The war: The article cites mid-2026 estimates of combined Russian and Ukrainian military casualties approaching 1.8 to 2 million, and verified civilian deaths of around 60,000.

American cities: It cites 805 homicides in Chicago in 2021, a rate of nearly 30 per 100,000, and more than 3,200 people killed in the city from 2016 to 2020. It describes St. Louis homicide rates of 40 to 50 or more per 100,000, and Los Angeles gang violence during the crack epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s.

Overdoses: It reports U.S. overdose deaths of over 100,000 a year at their peak and around 79,000 in 2024, with fentanyl driving most of them. "More Americans die yearly from this chemical SVO than U.S. forces lost in entire Vietnam or recent Middle East wars," Turner writes. "Imagine if Russian artillery caused 100k American deaths yearly - Washington would mobilize the planet."

Memphis: Under the heading "Memphis: Similar Script, Same Shit," the article cites rates of 30 to 40 or more per 100,000 in recent peaks.

Turner's argument

In a section titled "The Body Bag Olympics," Turner argues that "Russia's SVO, launched in February 2022, was never 'unprovoked.'" He writes that it responded to eight years of conflict in Donbas, "NATO's eastward creep threatening Russia's security, broken Minsk agreements, and a regime in Kiev incorporating neo-Nazi-tinged units like Azov." He calls the war "A tragic meat grinder prolonged by Western arms shipments," and "existential defense for Russia against encirclement." "In my opinion, this isn't mere inconsistency. It's hypocrisy weaponized into psyops," he writes. "The body counts don't lie. The media does." In the section "Media Psyops, Narrative Control, and the Hypocritical Fuckery," he argues that Western media apply "psyops" and narrative control, giving the war "the full Hollywood villain treatment" while urban violence at home is treated as background noise.

The article also contrasts a Russian soldier from a village near Belgorod, who "enlists not for empire but to stop the threat," with families in American cities who lose sons to street violence. His conclusion, under the heading "Mirror Mirror on the Wall," is blunt: "Russia fights for survival. America can't secure its streets." He closes: "Wake up. The body bags tell the truth."

The article lists its sources, including Chicago Tribune homicide trackers, the Illinois Policy Institute, CSIS, the CDC, USAFacts and city police department reports for St. Louis and Memphis.
