MADRID, Spain, October 24, 2026. In recent years, few psychological terms have travelled as fast as "gaslighting". The word comes from a 1938 stage play, later filmed twice, in which a husband secretly manipulates the gas lamps in his home and then convinces his wife that she is imagining the flickering lights. Today it describes a form of manipulation in which someone makes another person doubt their own memory and perception. "Gaslighting", a track by Mike Sain't Louis, takes that concept and puts it on a dance floor.
The opening lines reproduce the mechanism exactly: «Me dices baby no pasó / Que lo soñé, que todo fui yo». You tell me, baby, it didn't happen; that I dreamed it; that it was all me. Anyone who has experienced gaslighting will recognise those phrases. They are the standard script.
Trusting what you saw
The answer comes immediately, in a mix of Spanish and English: «Pero sorry, yo sé bien / Lo que vi, lo que sentí también». But sorry, I know very well what I saw, and what I felt too. It is the decisive move in any recovery from this kind of manipulation: going back to one's own perceptions and trusting them again.
Therapists who work with survivors often describe this step as the hardest. After months or years of being told that their memory is faulty, people may need to rebuild confidence in the simplest facts. Some keep diaries; others save messages; many need the help of a professional or a support group to separate what happened from what they were told happened. The song condenses that long process into a line that can be shouted on a dance floor.
The mirror as witness
The chorus begins with a moment of self-recognition: «En el espejo digo here I am». In the mirror I say here I am. Gaslighting erodes a person's sense of self; the mirror restores it. And then the refusal of blame: «Ya no me apagas, no soy tu blame». You can't switch me off anymore; I am not your blame. The verb «apagar», to switch off, is a clever echo of the gas lamps that gave the phenomenon its name.
Burn your gas
One line plays directly with the origin of the term: «Que arda tu gas, yo soy la queen». Let your gas burn; I am the queen. The manipulator's tool becomes fuel for the narrator's light. It is a typical Planeta Gayfolk twist, taking an instrument of harm and turning it into part of a celebration.
The hook is joyfully blunt: «Gaslighting, gaslighting, / Gracias pero no». Gaslighting, thanks but no. And then: «Gaslighting, gaslighting, / I am free now».
Too much to love?
The second verse contains one of the most painful phrases people in manipulative relationships hear: «Me dices you're too much to love». You tell me you're too much to love. The song answers by pointing out who was really hiding: «Pero yo no soy quien se escondió». And each step taken in heels becomes resistance: «Cada paso sobre este tacón / Es mi grito contra tu prisión».
Why the dance floor
Choosing a club as the setting for this story is deliberate. For many LGBTQ+ people, dance floors have long been spaces of safety and self-expression, places where the body is allowed to take up room. After an experience that made someone doubt their own mind, dancing is a way of returning to the body, to what is felt rather than what is argued. Planeta Gayfolk, the imaginary queer world built by Mike Sain't Louis, is full of songs in which recovery ends under the lights.
The video: beams of light in the dark
The official video is set in a warehouse filled with haze and coloured beams, where dancers move, fall and rise again. The photograph accompanying this release is one of its final frames: dazzling white and violet beams fanning out over a group of silhouetted dancers on the floor, their faces lost in the light. It is a picture of a room where, finally, nobody is playing tricks with the lamps.
