October 28, 2026 — AI//COST, the independent LLM API price desk at aicost.tools, today released a free AI Agent Cost Calculator that answers a question most teams only face after the first invoice: what does one agent task actually cost? The tool is live at https://aicost.tools/calculator/agent-cost/ and needs no sign-up.An AI agent does not pay for one prompt. On every step it re-sends the whole conversation: the system prompt, the task, every earlier output and every tool result. In the calculator's default 20-step task that adds up to roughly 521K input tokens for only 24K tokens of output, and the price of that single task ranges from about $0.022 to $2.16 depending on the model, a gap of roughly 100 times.
The calculator lets developers describe their agent loop (system and tool prompt size, task context, steps per task, output and reasoning per step, tool-result size per step, tasks per month and how many runs a task needs including failed attempts) and returns cost per task and per month for each model, using list prices from the AI//COST catalog. Prompt caching is modeled for the 14 of 15 models that publish a cached-input rate, where it cuts the per-task bill by roughly 61% to 79%.
"Teams budget agents as if they were chat prompts, and then the bill shows up looking like a long document job," said the AI//COST team. "Re-reading history is the hidden line item. We wanted a number you can check before you ship, not after."
The agent calculator joins the other free AI//COST tools, including LLM API, embedding, fine-tuning, image, video and text-to-speech calculators, a token counter, and side-by-side model and subscription comparisons. Rates are verified against vendor pricing pages, and the site carries no paid placements or sponsored rankings.
