World Environmental Health Day is coming on September 26. Ekam Eco Solutions is drawing attention to an important source of water use in office and school buildings: the ordinary urinal. It is now installed in more than 700 organizations and over 30,000 urinals across India. Two billion litres saved through a simple change
Standard urinals flush with treated water each time. In places like offices, train stations, factories, hotels, hospitals, and schools, each flush adds up, creating a large overall water use. This continuous demand can strain resources and increase costs. Zerodor approaches the problem by removing flushing from the urinal altogether.
The technology uses a patented mechanical valve that allows urine to drain while helping prevent sewer gases and odor from travelling back into the restroom. Unlike cartridge-based waterless systems, Zerodor is designed around a mechanical valve that does not require regular cartridge replacement.

Built from IIT Delhi research
Zerodor's story began with sanitation research associated with IIT Delhi. Ekam Eco Solutions was founded in 2013 as a research spin-off of IIT Delhi's work in sanitation and waste management, with more than 5,000 man-hours of sanitation research forming part of its early foundation.
The company's approach has been to develop technologies around the realities of Indian buildings rather than simply adapting imported systems. That includes high-footfall environments, different cleaning practices, existing plumbing infrastructure and the operational concerns of facility teams.
The technology has since been used across a wide range of organizations. Ekam's published material names Indian Railways, the Indian Army and Tata, alongside corporate and institutional users.
From IIT Delhi to Reality show and Rainmatter
The Zerodor journey has also taken the technology beyond conventional sanitation and sustainability circles. Ekam Eco Solutions appeared on one reality show, bringing its waterless urinal technology to a mainstream business audience. The company later received support from Rainmatter by Zerodha, following Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath's experience using Zerodor in Zerodha's offices.
Kamath publicly said that after using Zerodor for around six months, Zerodha's water bills were down 50%, and said Rainmatter was supporting the company because of its focus on water conservation. Ekam's own website currently lists Rainmatter by Zerodha among its supporting organizations and features Kamath's testimonial.
What environmental health has to do with a restroom
Environmental health is a topic many discuss when there are big problems such as air pollution, dirty water, trash, and climate change. These issues show how our surroundings affect our well-being and the planet's environmental health, making action essential for generations everywhere.
