AI researcher and technology professional Okechukwu Nicholas has completed research into the use of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to support social interaction for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).The research, completed as part of an MRes in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Wolverhampton, explores how AI-based emotion recognition could provide contextual support while making AI decisions more understandable to users.
The project, titled “Designing an Explainable Artificial Intelligence-Based Social Interaction Support System for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder,” resulted in the development of a prototype system combining facial-expression recognition with explainability techniques.
A key component of the research was the use of Explainable AI techniques, including Grad-CAM, to provide visual explanations of the areas of an image that influenced the model's predictions. This approach is intended to make AI systems less of a “black box” and support greater transparency when AI is applied to sensitive human-centred contexts.
“AI systems used in human-centred environments should not only produce predictions, but also provide a meaningful way of understanding how those predictions were reached,” said Okechukwu Nicholas. “Explainability is particularly important when AI is being considered for applications involving children, education and social interaction.”
The research also highlights the limitations of current emotion-recognition approaches, including challenges around model accuracy, class imbalance and uncertainty in real-world facial expressions. Rather than presenting AI as a replacement for human judgement, the project positions the technology as a potential support mechanism.
The work forms part of Okechukwu's broader professional focus on AI governance, responsible AI, explainability and the evaluation of AI systems.
Okechukwu is based in the UK and works across AI architecture, governance and AI system evaluation, with experience spanning enterprise technology and applied artificial intelligence.
