MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. «Hoy despierto feeling free». «My heels are high, mi mood is low». «Hablo Spanglish con quien quiera escuchar». Lines such as these are everywhere in the club tracks of Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk. They are not translation errors or gimmicks. They reflect how a generation of Spanish speakers actually talks, especially on dance floors, and they serve specific emotional purposes in the songs.
The language of the floor
Clubs have always been multilingual places. DJs play English tracks; slang travels from one country to another; tourists and locals dance side by side. In Spain, English words have become part of nightlife vocabulary: party, look, vibe, drop. The song «Mood» even turns a list of such loanwords into a chant. Spanglish in Mike's lyrics is first of all realistic. It sounds as a Saturday night sounds.
English for armour, Spanish for the wound
Listening closely, a pattern emerges. In «Dark Corners», English often carries the public face, the performance: «I fake a show they'll never know». Spanish often carries what hurts: «pero por dentro no hay más gas», but inside there is no gas left. The switch between languages mirrors the switch between appearance and truth. One language is for the show, the other for the confession.
Defiance in two tongues
In «No contact», a dance anthem about cutting off a manipulative ex, the mix becomes a weapon. «Cierro puertas, bye drama», the narrator says, closing doors in Spanish and dismissing the drama in English. «Mi therapist me ha ayudado», my therapist has helped me, combines a Spanish sentence with an English noun in a way that sounds completely natural to young listeners. Healing, the song implies, can be spoken in whatever words come first.
«Gaslighting» does something similar, keeping the English term for the manipulation tactic while answering it in Spanish: «gracias pero no», thanks, but no. Many psychological terms used in survivor communities, gaslighting, love bombing, no contact, circulate in English even among Spanish speakers. The songs reflect that reality.
Joy without borders
Spanglish is also simply fun. In «Marica chill», the narrator happily admits he will talk Spanglish with anyone, and if they do not understand, they will enjoy it anyway. The mixing becomes a form of welcome: no one is excluded because of language. For a project that speaks to LGBTQ+ listeners in many countries, that openness is important.
A tradition with history
Code-switching has a long history in music, from Latin pop in the United States to reggaeton and flamenco fusion. Mike's Spanglish belongs to that lineage but uses it for distinct subjects: narcissistic abuse, depression, queer pride. That combination of a global club language with very personal content is one of the signatures of GAYFOLK.
A bilingual playlist
To hear the range, try «No contact», «Gaslighting», «Dark Corners» and «Marica chill», then «Mi salvador», a romantic dance track set in Benidorm that weaves the two languages into a love story.
Help in any language
If any of these songs touch on your own experience of manipulation or hidden depression, support is available in whatever language you speak. In Spain, 024 offers free help at every hour. In other countries, local crisis lines and LGBTQ+ organisations can help. Mike's openness about his own therapy appears even in the lyrics, as the line about his therapist shows.
