MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Every club has its own light. Some are dark and red, some are flooded with strobes, some glow in pink neon. For many LGBTQ+ people, those lights mark the boundary between the outside world and a space where they can be themselves. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk, writes about that light in many of his dance songs. Following it reveals a small vocabulary of nightlife emotion.
The flash
«Flash» puts light in its title and its chorus: «Flash, cámara, acción, brilla en la noche, es la conexión». Flash, camera, action, shine in the night, it is the connection. The narrator arrives ready to give everything and describes herself as «una queen saliendo del lodo», a queen rising out of the mud. The flash here is a spotlight of rebirth. After hard times, the club becomes the stage where she shines again.
The disco light
In «Chihuahua», an English club song, the disco light shines on a dancer and his small dog: «Under the disco light, we're running free». The light is playful and generous. It turns an ordinary companion into a dance partner and a living room moment into a party. It is the joy of light for its own sake.
City lights
«Barcelona» opens with «city lights» and the glow of the Catalan capital at night. Here light belongs to the streets and the sea, to a romantic night walk that becomes a dance on the sand. «Pura magia», written in Portuguese, does the same with «luzes brilham na cidade», lights shine in the city. The urban glow sets the scene for meeting someone.
Light as armour
Not all club light is happy. In «Dark Corners», the narrator shines brighter than anyone in the streets while feeling empty inside. The light becomes armour, something to hide behind. Many people know this experience: the brighter the party, the easier it is to keep a secret sadness unseen.
Light on the skin
«Gaslighting» contains a beautiful image: «Las luces bailan sobre mi piel», the lights dance on my skin. After rejecting a manipulator, the narrator feels stronger, and the light becomes a sign of renewed presence in his own body. The dance floor, once again, is a place of recovery.
Why light matters
Light in clubs is not decoration. It changes how people see each other and themselves. It hides some things and reveals others; it creates intimacy in crowds and anonymity in small spaces. Mike's songs capture that ambivalence. Club light can heal, disguise, celebrate or connect, often in the same night.

Looking after yourself after dark
Nightlife can be joyful, and it can also become a way of avoiding pain. If you find that you only feel alive under club lights, or that nights out leave you emptier, it may help to talk to someone. In Spain, the 024 line provides free support at any hour. In other countries, local crisis lines and LGBTQ+ services can help. Mike speaks openly about his own treatment for depression and anxiety.
