The mirror that changes its mind: «El espejo de enfrente» on body image and self-cruelty

Some mornings the reflection is kind, some mornings it is brutal. In «El espejo de enfrente», Mike Sain't Louis writes about the mirror across the room and the inner sound of self-contempt it can awaken. Free to download.

MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Most homes have one: a mirror placed exactly where you cannot avoid it, across from the bed or opposite the door. You see yourself before you are ready. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk, has written a whole song about that mirror, «el espejo de enfrente», the mirror opposite, and about the strange power it can hold over how a person feels.

Dawn and a pale shadow

The song opens at the hour of maximum vulnerability: «En la penumbra de la madrugada», in the half-light before dawn. The moon hides a pale shadow. The narrator looks into the glass and does not live in the present. His head feels «un globo sonda», a trial balloon, floating and uncertain. It is the description of someone who has not slept well and whose thoughts are louder than his surroundings.

The chorus of self-disgust

Then the chorus arrives, and it is shockingly direct. «¡Ay! Qué asco me doy», oh, how I disgust myself. The narrator says he is fed up with seeing his own face in that mirror, using a strong Spanish swear word that underlines the exhaustion. «Soy tan cruel, tan cruel», I am so cruel, so cruel.

The cruelty is turned inward. This is what makes the song so recognisable to people who live with low self-esteem, body dysmorphia or depression: the harshest critic is not outside but inside, and the mirror simply gives it a stage. Many gay men in particular grow up under intense pressure about appearance, and the song touches that nerve without naming it.

A reflection that mocks

The second verse continues the theme. Every reflection brings a mockery: «Cada reflejo una burla me trae». The eyes are tired of looking. The mind fades in silence and searches for a breath, a place to escape from the glass. The mirror here is less an object than a companion that will not leave.

The bridge: good days and bad days

The most interesting part of the song is its bridge, which introduces a twist. Some days, the narrator admits, the mirror behaves well: «hoy se está portando bien el espejo de enfrente». Abs are visible. He looks «resplandeciente», radiant. Other days it behaves terribly, and he cannot even feel his vital signs. «Creo que ya es suficiente», I think that is enough.

This alternation is the truth at the core of the song. The mirror does not change; the person looking does. Self-image fluctuates with mood, sleep, stress and memory. A body that seems fine on Tuesday seems unbearable on Wednesday. By making the mirror the one who misbehaves, the lyric captures how it feels from the inside, while letting the listener see what is really going on.

Humour in the mirror

As often in Mike Sain't Louis's work, there is a playful thread running through the pain. The vanity of checking one's abs, the theatrical «¡Ay!», the idea that a piece of furniture could be well or badly behaved: all of it adds lightness. The song lets listeners laugh at a habit they share, and that laughter can be the first step toward treating oneself with more kindness.

Kindness as a practice

The song does not offer a solution, but its existence suggests one. Naming the inner cruelty out loud, in a chorus, makes it less powerful. It becomes something that can be observed rather than obeyed. For anyone who struggles with what they see in the glass, the track is a reminder that the reflection is never the whole story.

If you need support

If the way you see yourself is affecting your eating, your sleep or your will to go on, please reach out. In Spain, 024 is a free helpline that answers at any time of day or night. In other places, local crisis lines, eating disorder services and LGBTQ+ organisations can help. Mike shares his own experience with treatment publicly because he knows how much it helps to hear that someone else has been there.
