Mirrors, broken glass and a reflection that lies: how Mike Sain't Louis writes about seeing yourself

Mirrors appear across the catalogue of Mike Sain't Louis: the cruel glass of «El espejo de enfrente», the shattered reflections of «Ruido en mi mente», the broken mirrors that reveal lies in «Mentes diabólicas» and the defiant «here I am» of «Gaslighting». Free to download.

MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Mirrors are one of the oldest symbols in art and literature. They reveal and distort; they show us what we are and what we fear we are. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk, returns to them often. Followed across several songs, his mirrors tell a story of self-image damaged by depression and manipulation, and slowly repaired.

The cruel mirror

The most direct mirror song is «El espejo de enfrente», about the glass placed across the room. Its chorus is a cry of self-disgust: the narrator is sick of seeing his own face. Some days, the bridge admits, the mirror behaves well and shows visible abs and a radiant look; other days it behaves terribly. The mirror never changes, of course. What changes is the eye looking into it. The song is an accurate portrait of how mood shapes self-perception.

The shattered mirror

In «Ruido en mi mente», Noise in My Mind, the mirror is broken. The narrator keeps falling «en espejos partidos», into split mirrors, «donde mi reflejo está malherido», where my reflection is badly wounded. Here the mirror stands for the fragmented self of someone overwhelmed by anxiety and memories. The reflection is not ugly; it is injured. That distinction matters. It points to harm done rather than a defect.

Mirrors that reveal

«Mentes diabólicas» offers a different view. In a song about hypocrisy, broken mirrors become places where truth appears: lies, the lyric says, are proven in shattered glass. When something breaks, a friendship, a relationship, an illusion, we finally see what was hidden behind the polished surface. The broken mirror here is not a wound but a revelation.

The mirror of affirmation

The healing turn comes in «Gaslighting». After rejecting a partner who insisted that nothing happened, the narrator stands in front of the glass and declares in English: «here I am». The mirror is no longer an enemy. It is the place where he reclaims his own reality. For survivors of gaslighting, whose perception was constantly questioned, looking at themselves and trusting what they see is an act of recovery.

A small history of a symbol

Read in sequence, these songs move from cruelty to injury to revelation to affirmation. That arc echoes the experience of many people recovering from depression or abuse. At first the reflection is hateful; then it is understood as wounded; then the damage is seen for what it is; finally, the person can look and say: this is me, and I am still here.

Mirrors and queer lives

For many LGBTQ+ people, the mirror has an extra layer of meaning. It is where they first rehearsed who they wanted to be, tried on clothes, makeup or expressions that the world might not accept. It can also be where internalised shame looks back at them. Mike's mirror songs speak to both experiences without naming them directly.

Listening order

To follow the arc, listen to «El espejo de enfrente», then «Ruido en mi mente», then «Mentes diabólicas» and finally «Gaslighting».

If the reflection hurts

If you find it painful to look at yourself, or if your self-image is affecting your eating, sleep or desire to go on, please reach out. In Spain, the 024 line offers free, confidential support around the clock. In other countries, local crisis lines and eating disorder or LGBTQ+ services can help. Mike speaks openly about his own treatment for depression and anxiety.
