ABERDEEN, UK - Zafar Alam, a civil engineer and Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB), will publish What Are We Missing? How to Think More Clearly Before You Decide on 13 February 2027. The Kindle edition is open for pre-order now.The book is about the point just before a decision, when something important is easy to overlook. It uses real, well-documented failures to show how smart people and well-run organisations miss what matters: the Deepwater Horizon blowout, the 2008 financial crisis, the Challenger launch, and Mars Climate Orbiter, set against Apollo 13, where the same pressure ended differently. It offers one working framework, PRISM, so readers can check their own thinking before they commit.
It runs to 441 pages in 15 chapters, with 498 works listed as sources by chapter and an index. Alam wrote it over five years.
"I spent twelve years in engineering in the UK and Middle East, where a missed check can hurt people," says Alam. "Most bad decisions I have seen were not stupid. Someone did not look at the thing that had changed. This book is how to look."
Alam is a civil engineer and Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB) with a Masters in Construction Management.
