ABERDEEN, UK - Zafar Alam, a civil engineer and Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB), has published a fully rewritten second edition of The Cognitive Crisis in AI-Augmented Work. The new edition is 72 pages, built around one question: what happens to a person's own ability to think when a machine does the thinking first? The first edition appeared early because the subject was already affecting people. The second edition goes further. It starts with the evidence, then moves to parents, who must decide how children first meet AI. Then it covers students, then workers and managers. Each chapter follows the same plan: Purpose, Help, Keep, Check, Change. The book includes four practical exercises and groups its sources by chapter at the back.
The author took out claims he could not support from the first edition, including an unsourced study count and several unsourced figures. His note at the front of the book explains why.
"I wanted parents to have something they can use tonight," says Alam. "The aim is not to scare anyone off AI. It is to help children use it in a way that builds their own ability instead of replacing it."
Alam spent twelve years in engineering in the UK and Middle East, where a missed check can have real consequences. He writes about decisions the same way: look for the change nobody rechecked. His next book, What Are We Missing? How to Think More Clearly Before You Decide, is due on 13 February 2027 and is open for pre-order.
