Glasgow, Scotland — Riverbank IT Systems has warned Scottish businesses to review their Microsoft Azure subscriptions after Microsoft confirmed that four widely used virtual machine families will retire on 15 November 2029, with price increases of approximately 25% on older VM series taking effect from 1 February 2027.The affected retirement series are Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3 and Esv3 — general-purpose and memory-optimised virtual machines commonly used for business applications, databases and development environments. After 15 November 2029 these VMs will no longer be available to create, resize or run, and may be deallocated.
Separately, Microsoft is raising pay-as-you-go, Enterprise Agreement and Microsoft Customer Agreement prices by around 25% on v1 series (Bv1, D, Ds, F, Fs, G, Gs, Ls, NP, HC) and v2 series (Av2, Amv2, Dv2, Dsv2, Fsv2, Lsv2) from 1 February 2027. Existing Reserved Instance contracts keep their current pricing until the term ends; savings plans will reflect the new underlying rates.
Microsoft has also lifted previously announced capacity-growth restrictions on v4 families, giving businesses a clearer migration path.
"A lot of Scottish businesses spun up Azure VMs years ago and never looked at them again," said Timothy A., founder of Riverbank IT Systems. "This is exactly the kind of thing our free IT cost audit catches — a VM quietly costing more every month on a series that's either going up 25% in price or being retired entirely."
Riverbank recommends businesses identify affected VM series in their subscriptions, map workloads to current VM families, review reserved-instance renewal dates, and test migrations in non-production environments first.
Riverbank IT Systems offers a free Azure cost review for Scottish businesses — identifying affected virtual machines, projecting the February 2027 price impact, and recommending a migration plan.
