Glasgow, Scotland — Scottish businesses running older Microsoft Azure virtual machines will see compute costs rise by approximately 25% from 1 February 2027, under pricing changes announced by Microsoft.The increase applies to pay-as-you-go, Enterprise Agreement and Microsoft Customer Agreement rates across v1 VM series (Bv1, D, Ds, F, Fs, G, Gs, Ls, NP and HC) and v2 series (Av2, Amv2, Dv2, Dsv2, Fsv2 and Lsv2).
Existing Reserved Instance contracts are protected until their term ends — at renewal, usage reverts to current pay-as-you-go pricing even where auto-renew is enabled. Savings plans covering affected VM families will reflect the higher underlying rates.
The pricing change arrives alongside Microsoft's announcement that Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3 and Esv3 virtual machines retire on 15 November 2029, after which they cannot be created, resized or run. Capacity-growth restrictions on v4 series have simultaneously been lifted, easing the path to newer VM families.
"A 25% price rise on infrastructure you forgot you were running is the sort of thing that only shows up when finance queries the Azure bill," said Timothy A., founder of Riverbank IT Systems. "Most Scottish SMEs we audit are paying for VMs on series that are either being retired or repriced. Moving to a current VM family usually costs less and performs better — the trick is knowing which machines to move first."
