MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Some forms of control look generous from the outside. A partner who offers a roof, a job, a place to stay can seem kind, until the person receiving those things discovers that they come with an invisible price: gratitude forever, silence forever. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk, writes about that trap in «Tu mendigo». The title says what he refuses to be any longer: your beggar.
The convinced one
The song opens by addressing someone who is sure of himself: «Y tú, tan convencido / de que sigo siendo tu mendigo», and you, so convinced that I am still your beggar. The tone is calm but ironic. The other person believes the old arrangement still holds. The song exists to announce that it does not.
A refuge that was a cell
The first verse contains one of the most precise images in the catalogue. «Me abriste la puerta / con llave prestada», you opened the door for me with a borrowed key, «y dijiste que era mi refugio, / pero era una celda alquilada», and you said it was my refuge, but it was a rented cell. The details matter. The key is not even his. The refuge is not even owned. Everything offered was provisional and conditional.
He was given a corner with a stained carpet and «un silencio lleno de / amistad interesada», a silence full of self-interested friendship. The phrase «amistad interesada» is common in Spanish for relationships based on what one can get.
The trembling hands
The second verse describes neglect hiding behind responsibility. The other person cared for the business «pero no el temblor de mis manos», but not the trembling of my hands. He said the cold was the sun's fault, not the narrator's shivers. In other words, the narrator's distress was explained away, attributed to anything except the situation he was in.
Then comes the turning point: «Y hoy te digo que no soy tu saco de boxeo / y mucho menos tu mendigo». Today I tell you I am not your punching bag, and much less your beggar.
Smiling without witnesses
The middle section describes how it felt from inside. He sat down «donde no había sitio», where there was no room. He was kicked «por no pedir permiso», for not asking permission. He smiled out of obligation and cried «sin testigos», without witnesses. These lines capture the double life of someone in a controlling relationship: compliance in public, grief in private.
Who brought the chaos
The final verse turns the blame around. The other person said that chaos came with the narrator, «y eras tú quien lo traía», and it was you who brought it. He was angered by the narrator's way of being hurt and offended by his joy. «Te dolía mi arte», my art hurt you. He wanted to save him and then to sweep him away.
That line about art is significant. Creative expression often threatens those who rely on control, because it gives the other person words and a life of their own.
Dignity regained
«Tu mendigo» is ultimately a song about dignity. It acknowledges how much the narrator accepted, and it marks the moment he stops accepting it. For listeners who have depended materially on a partner, or who were made to feel they owed everything, it offers language for walking away.
Getting support
Financial and emotional dependency can make leaving very hard. If you are in a situation that resembles the rented cell described here, there is help. In Spain, the 024 line offers free emotional support at all hours, and specialised services can advise on abuse and housing. Elsewhere, local crisis lines and domestic abuse organisations, including LGBTQ+ ones, can help. Mike speaks openly about his own treatment and recovery.
