«You never did»: «Gatekeeping», Mike Sain't Louis's English-language reply to people who draw a line around themselves and call it culture

The Madrid-based artist answers the critics of his work in a song built from short, repeated sentences that sound like an argument overheard.

CHICAGO, United States, October 23, 2026. «Gatekeeping» belongs to «Ojalá se pudiera viajar a GAYFOLK». Written in English, it is shaped as a list of the things critics say and one reply: «You say / it doesn’t count. / You say / it’s not the way. / You say / anyone could / but you never did». The repetition of «You say» works like a tally of objections, each one answered by the fact that the speaker did the work and the critic did not. It sits alongside other songs in the catalogue, such as «Tus letras son basura», in which the author responds to people who decide what counts as art.

The word gatekeeping is borrowed straight from English-speaking debates about who gets to belong in culture, music and scenes. The song is in English and needs no translation for American listeners, who know the term well.

Mental health sits at the centre of the project. The author has said publicly that he lives with depression and anxiety and that therapy is helping him, and some of his best-known lyrics were born on those nights. He releases them so that other people feel encouraged to ask for help sooner.

The song belongs to Planeta Gayfolk, the imaginary world Mike Sain't Louis has been building from Madrid: a queer planet where nobody has to hide in order to live. That world now spans 273 songs released on his own label, MIKE SAIN'T LOUIS, and distributed by Ditto Music, plus a three-album trilogy that tells its story from beginning to end.

Mike Sain't Louis does not hide how each piece is made. He is the author of the lyrics and the producer of the songs, and he directs the videos; the musical part and the vocal performance come from AI tools. That line is written on his website and is part of how he presents himself to the press.

The GAYFOLK trilogy can be downloaded in full and for free from gayfolkplanet.com, with no sign-up. It is a deliberate choice by the author, who would rather the music travel than sit behind a paywall, and every album comes with a listening guide.

Anyone who wants to read the lyrics before listening will find them on mikesaintlouis.com, next to the blog entry about the song. The other lyrics from the same album are there too. The whole catalogue, song by song, can be browsed on the website.
