TychoSpot Launches Vocal Notes, a Private On-Device Transcription App for Apple Silicon Macs

Vocal Notes brings private local transcription, synced playback, custom vocabulary, Quick Dictation, and Markdown export to Apple Silicon Macs.

July 15, 2026 — TychoSpot today announced the direct release of Vocal Notes, a native macOS transcription workspace designed to record live speech or import existing audio and video while keeping speech recognition on the user's Mac. The app is available now for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Most speech-to-text services require recordings to be uploaded before processing. Vocal Notes takes a local-first approach: speech recognition runs on Apple Silicon, and source recordings and transcripts are not sent to a cloud transcription service. The core workflow works offline and does not require an account. Users can record meetings, interviews, lectures, voice notes, and drafts, or import MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, and MOV files.

The application keeps generated text synchronized with the source recording. Selecting a word or passage moves playback to the corresponding moment, allowing journalists, researchers, students, authors, and podcasters to verify names, quotations, figures, and specialist terminology without switching between separate applications.

Vocal Notes also includes custom vocabulary for names, brands, acronyms, and technical terms. Transcripts can be organized in folders, merged across related sessions, copied, or exported as clean Markdown. A system-wide Quick Dictation window opens with a configurable global shortcut, enabling users to dictate and paste text into Mail, Notes, browsers, and other Mac applications.

"We built Vocal Notes for people who need the convenience of modern speech recognition without turning every recording into a cloud upload," TychoSpot said. "Keeping the transcript connected to its source makes review faster and gives users a practical way to check the details that matter."

The interface is built as a native Mac application rather than a wrapped web service. Local speech models are bundled with the app, and automatic updates are included. Because recognition is performed on-device, users do not face recurring transcription-minute allowances or upload queues.

Vocal Notes is available as a US$49.90 one-time purchase through Gumroad. The purchase includes the downloadable Mac application, a personal license key, and automatic updates. No recurring subscription is required.
