The Metaphor Society Announces 2026–27 Programme Exploring Metaphor, Mind and Meaning

The global online community invites researchers, practitioners and curious learners to explore live events and its growing library on metaphor and meaning.

BRIGHTON, United Kingdom — 30 August 2026 — The Metaphor Society has announced its 2026–27 programme of live online meetings and is inviting people from every background to explore a growing collection of resources on metaphor, symbolic thought and human experience at https://www.metaphorsociety.com/.

Founded by Andrew T. Austin and developed from his work in the therapeutic exploration of metaphor, The Metaphor Society now brings together interests spanning psychology, communication, philosophy, embodied cognition, storytelling, culture, symbolism and personal development. Membership is open to researchers, practitioners and anyone who is curious about the ways language and imagery organise thought, behaviour and relationships; no specialist training is required.

The Society’s 2026–27 programme begins on 3 September 2026 with “Rainbows and Resurrection,” an online presentation exploring rainbows as an archetype and in autogenic metaphor. Later meetings will address metaphor across psychotherapy, the symbolic dimensions of the winter season, “living death” metaphors, tidal waves and floods as images of overwhelm, and the experience of absence and return. The programme also includes open discussion and question-and-answer sessions, invited speakers and access to a growing recording archive for members.

Alongside its live programme, the website provides an expanding public learning library. Readers can explore foundational introductions to metaphor, embodied cognition and simulation theory; essays on language, culture and society; word histories and recurring roots; therapeutic metaphor and story; and material on archetypes, mythology and symbolic imagination. The site also points readers towards recommended books and related projects for deeper study.

The Society is designed as a meeting place between disciplines that are too often studied separately. Its programme connects academic ideas with practical observation and shared discussion, creating space for linguists, therapists, educators, coaches, writers, researchers and independent learners to exchange perspectives.

Regular meetings are held live on Zoom, usually from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. UK time. Members can take part in presentations and discussions and revisit completed sessions through the recording archive. People interested in contributing can also propose a talk, discussion or presentation connected with metaphor, symbolism, language, psychology or human experience.
