The Harder Path: How Rashmi Metaliks Is Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Iron and Steel

Rashmi Metaliks is reducing its carbon footprint by increasing biomass co-firing from 5% to 20% at its 45 MW captive power plant, alongside energy-efficiency initiatives and emerging carbon-neutralization technologies. These efforts reflect its commitment to sustainable steelmaking and a cleaner future for generations to come.

The Harder Path: How Rashmi
Metaliks Is Reducing the Carbon
Footprint of Iron and Steel
The ductile iron pipe under American streets begins in a furnace, and making iron is
among the most carbon-intensive work in industry. The International Energy Agency
estimates iron and steel account for roughly 7% of global energy-system CO₂ emissions,
largely because coal supplies both the heat and the chemistry that turn ore into metal.
High-temperature processes and coal-based power make reducing the carbon footprint
of an integrated plant extremely difficult. At Rashmi Metaliks, we are doing it anyway, for
our future generations.
One practical step is biomass co-firing at our 45 MW captive power plant: replacing a
portion of coal with biomass pellets made at our own facility, preferably from agricultural
residues that might otherwise be burned in open fields. We began with a 5% blend by
weight and have now reached up to 20%. Every tonne of coal displaced cuts fossil-fuel use
and fossil CO₂ emissions, lowering the carbon footprint of the electricity that runs our
mills.
Illustrative example: hypothetical 45 MW plant using generic assumptions (not Rashmi
Metaliks measured data)
Biomass blend by
weight
Fossil CO₂ avoided/year Fossil CO₂
remaining/year
0% 0 tonnes 318,300 tonnes
5% 11,000 tonnes 307,300 tonnes
10% 22,400 tonnes 295,900 tonnes
15% 34,200 tonnes 284,100 tonnes
20% 46,400 tonnes 271,900 tonnes
These are illustrative estimates, not audited company results. They avoid fossil CO₂, not
total stack CO₂, because burning biomass also releases biogenic CO₂. Actual performance
depends on fuel quality, plant efficiency and operating conditions. Biomass co-firing does
not eliminate emissions, but it reduces their fossil share and the plant’s carbon footprint.
Biomass co-firing is one part of a broader program to shrink our carbon footprint. We
recover furnace gas to replace fossil fuel, recycle process water, and are adopting new
technologies to improve efficiency and evaluate credible carbon-neutralization pathways.
Our commitment is to track our carbon footprint transparently and report progress
honestly.
Lowering the carbon footprint of heavy industry is hard, measurable work. We owe it to
the generations who will inherit what we build.
