Actor Swara Bhasker’s comments about the Jauhar sequence in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat have triggered renewed controversy. Speaking at a Women, Life, Freedom event in New Delhi on August 31, Bhasker questioned whether portraying Jauhar as an expression of honour could send a troubling message to survivors of sexual violence. A short clip of her remarks subsequently circulated widely online, with critics interpreting her comments as describing Rani Padmavati and the women of Chittor as “cowards.” Bhasker later rejected that interpretation, saying her remarks had been mistranslated and taken out of context. She clarified that her reference to a “coward” concerned how a hypothetical rape survivor might perceive a message that glorifies choosing death over survival, rather than referring to the historical women themselves.
