ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — September 2, 2026 — Start with Math has launched an adaptive math learning platform built around a simple idea: students should not have to start where their grade level says they should. They should start where their understanding actually is.Math is cumulative. A student who struggles with fractions or decimals may eventually find algebra difficult, even when the original gap occurred years earlier. Traditional instruction has limited ability to stop and go backward for every student.
Start with Math takes a different approach.
The platform begins with a free Placement experience designed to identify where a student's understanding actually starts to break down. Instead of simply assigning a grade-level course, Start with Math uses backward routing to identify prerequisite skills that may be missing, guides the student back to those skills, and then returns them to the original learning path.
"That's what a good tutor does," said Gary Van Gundy, founder of Start with Math. "When my son struggled with math, his tutor didn't just give him more problems. She went backward until she found where his understanding had broken down, rebuilt that foundation, and then moved forward. That experience became the foundation for Start with Math."
Lessons are built around understanding rather than simply producing answers. Students receive plain-language explanations, fully worked examples, practice problems, and built-in Study Tools including flashcards, Walkthroughs, and Quick Reference materials. When a student repeatedly struggles with a particular type of problem, the platform can identify the prerequisite skill behind it and route the student backward before continuing forward.
Start with Math offers a connected mathematics path ranging from Pre-Algebra and Algebra through Geometry, Statistics, Trigonometry and Precalculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and advanced college-level mathematics.
For educators, the platform also maps K-12 topics to Common Core standards, making it easier to understand how individual lessons connect to existing curriculum.
Foundations, a 31-lesson collection covering whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, and problem solving, is available completely free, forever. No credit card is required.
For students who need additional coursework, individual Start with Math courses are currently available for $5 each as a one-time purchase. There are no subscriptions or automatic renewals.
Start with Math is also inviting 50 educators to participate in its founding educator program. Teachers, tutors, and homeschool educators can receive free access, use Start with Math with real students, and provide direct feedback to the founder about what works, what does not, and what should be built next.
