Softaken Software has launched a free browser-based tool that converts images into ICO files, giving developers, designers, and website owners a quick way to generate favicons, desktop icons, and app shortcuts without installing software or uploading files to a server. The tool, called Image to ICO, is live now at softaken.com/online/image-to-ico/.ICO remains the standard format for website favicons and Windows application icons, but most everyday image files — PNG, WEBP, and similar formats — aren't saved that way by default. Converting between the two typically means either downloading dedicated software or trusting an image to a third-party upload service. Softaken's tool skips both of those steps by running the entire conversion locally, inside the user's own browser.
To use it, a person drops in an image, and the tool resizes and reformats it into a properly structured ICO file, ready to download. A preview is shown before the file is saved, so users can check how the icon will look at a smaller size before committing to it.

"Icons are small, so there's not a lot of room for detail to survive the conversion," said a Softaken product representative. "The tool handles the resizing automatically, but we also wanted people to see a preview first, since a photo that looks fine full-size doesn't always hold up once it's shrunk down to icon size."
Softaken notes that square or near-square source images tend to produce the cleanest icons, though the tool will adjust images that aren't already square. For users who need to generate multiple icons at once or want additional sizing options, Softaken also offers a Windows desktop version with expanded batch features.
