Russian Civilian Casualties: William Aaron Turner Sources the Toll of Ukrainian Strikes and Argues a Western Double Standard

Russian civilian casualties: William Aaron Turner sources the toll of Ukrainian strikes, from Wildberries to Belgorod, and argues a double standard.

WASHINGTON, DC, November 2, 2026 - Russian civilian casualties from Ukrainian strikes are the subject of "Russian Civilian Casualties and Ukrainian Strikes: Sources," a new file in The Ukraine Files by William Aaron Turner, Founder & President of Infinitum Corporation. The post is the sourced, standalone version of Turner's opinion article "Grandmas, Toddlers, and Forklift Drivers," and it separates what named outlets reported from what Turner concludes.

The headline figure

"Since February 2022, more than 8,000 Russian civilians have been killed in Ukrainian strikes (BBC, 2026)," the post begins. Turner frames the work as "all data from the public record, all conclusions mine," and states that the original article is an opinion piece, not a balanced report.

Cases documented in the post

Wildberries warehouses: According to AP (2026), Ukraine struck between 12 and 23 facilities of Russia's largest online retailer over about a month. The post reports 9 to 13 employees killed, including 8 night-shift workers in Kotovsk on July 18, 2026, and one young woman killed in Krasnodar on July 22. Strikes later reached St. Petersburg, Simferopol, Ryazan, Yekaterinburg, Voronezh, Tula, Vladimir and the Koledino facility near Moscow. AP is quoted describing the targets as "warehouses that bring the convenience of online shopping across the breadth of Russia," and The Conversation as "bringing the war home to consumers." The BBC is quoted noting that the platform sold military-related goods such as body armour until recently.

Arkhipo-Osipovka beach: Per the BBC (2026), a drone crashed onto a Black Sea beach on August 3, 2026, killing 7 people, 3 of them children, and injuring 40. Ukraine did not claim the strike. Some Ukrainian Telegram channels said electronic warfare caused the crash; eyewitnesses quoted by Russian media heard gunfire first. Governor Veniamin Kondratyev called it "a deliberate strike on civilians," and one holidaymaker said, "We covered ourselves with sun loungers, and didn't see where it exploded."

TANECO refinery, Nizhnekamsk: The post reports 13 people killed, including 1 child, and 39 injured on August 10, 2026, several of them Central Asian workers from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan staying in a nearby hostel. Ukraine's military confirmed the strike, Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov declared mourning, and Ukraine says it wants to bring the price of the war home to ordinary Russians. Turner writes: "I do not dispute that a refinery that produces fuel is a different kind of target from a warehouse. My argument is about what happens to the people next to it."

Border regions: Citing the BBC (2026), the post records 224 civilians killed and 1,500 injured in July 2026 alone in Belgorod and adjacent areas, six people killed in missile strikes on Belgorod region overnight on August 17, 2026, a woman killed on a civilian bus, and a playground hit in Printsevka with one child killed. "I argue that a campaign of this size is not a series of accidents," Turner writes.

Ukraine's position, and Turner's argument

The post records that Ukrainian officials, as quoted by the BBC, say Ukraine does not deliberately target civilians, that the warehouses supplied the Russian military, and that some deaths are the "accidental result of air defences shooting down incoming missiles and drones." Moscow denies the military-supply claim.

Turner argues that a "dual-use" standard this wide would make almost any large retailer a target, comparing it to treating Amazon or a hardware store as a military target, and that blaming air defences does not explain why a drone was in that sky; he compares it to "throwing a brick at a house and blaming the occupant for trying to catch it." The post also records Moscow's position that the strikes on civilian commercial facilities are terrorism against ordinary workers. He argues that Western governments and institutions condemn civilian deaths in Ukraine while saying far less about civilian deaths in Russia. In Turner's words: "the Geneva Conventions do not apply selectively, and if killing civilians is wrong it is wrong whichever side's drone does it."

He labels these arguments as his own position, not findings of any court or UN body, and asks readers to check each figure against its named source.
