Peppers, salt and an eternal chocolate break: the kitchen metaphors of Mike Sain't Louis

Food appears in the lyrics of Mike Sain't Louis at surprising moments: a pinch of salt for suffering, a pepper for the past, a chocolate bar for a heartbreak, watered-down coffee for a first date. A tasting menu of everyday images. Free to download.

MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Spanish is a language full of food. People say something does not matter «ni un pimiento», not a pepper; that a person is «la sal de la vida», the salt of life; that a nervous person is «como un flan», as wobbly as a custard. Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind GAYFOLK and Planeta Gayfolk, draws on that tradition, using kitchen and table images to talk about love, pain and recovery.

A pinch of salt, a pepper

«Ni un pimiento» is the most culinary song in the catalogue. It begins by saying that suffering is not worth «una pizca de sal», a pinch of salt, and builds its chorus on the expression «no vale un pimiento llorar por el pasado», crying over the past is not worth a pepper. Later the lyric describes a lost love as second-hand and past its expiry date, as if it were a product on a supermarket shelf. The humour comes from treating a broken heart as a disappointing purchase.

An eternal chocolate break

In «Y sigo temblando siempre», at the darkest point of the song, the narrator says he needs «un eterno Kit Kat», an eternal Kit Kat. The famous chocolate bar is associated in Spain with a slogan about taking a break. Asking for an eternal one is a darkly funny way of saying: I need to stop, and I do not know for how long. The reference brings an everyday object into a moment of crisis, which is exactly how such moments often feel.

Watered-down coffee

Coffee appears in several songs, always as a marker of daily life. In «Marica chill», the morning after a party begins with «un café solo, sin leche y sin drama», a black coffee, no milk and no drama. In another song, a disappointing date includes a weak coffee that nonetheless becomes the best date of the week. Small rituals such as coffee are anchors. They tell us the day is starting, whatever happened the night before.

A fruit as a gift

In «Marica chill», the local fruit seller gives the narrator «un mango lush», a juicy mango, while a neighbour disapproves. The gift is tiny but meaningful: in a street where some people judge, others offer kindness in the form of fruit. Food here becomes a gesture of acceptance.

Five pints and small sandwiches

«El anillo de casado» opens in a popular bar chain famous for its small sandwiches, with five pints shared between two men. The setting is ordinary and affordable, the kind of place where countless real stories begin. By placing a secret love affair there, the song grounds it in everyday Madrid life.

Why food works in songs

Food metaphors are immediate. Everyone eats; everyone knows the taste of salt or the comfort of chocolate. Using them to describe emotions makes abstract feelings concrete and often funny. They also connect the songs to popular speech, the way grandmothers and neighbours talk, which is central to the folk spirit of GAYFOLK.

Feeding yourself in hard times

Depression and anxiety often affect appetite and daily routines such as eating and sleeping. If you are struggling to look after yourself, please talk to someone. In Spain, the 024 line provides free support at every hour. In other countries, local crisis lines and mental health services can help. Mike speaks openly about his own treatment and the routines that support his recovery.
