Boston, Massechusetts – Brand 21, an enterprise brand strategy and market transformation firm, today released a new brand study, AI: Brand Builder or Brand Risk?, examining how artificial intelligence is changing the way organizations build brands, engage customers and get discovered. The study argues that the question for leaders is no longer whether to adopt AI, but how to use it to create value while protecting trust, differentiation and human connection. The opportunity and the risk
The study identifies four areas where AI is giving organizations an advantage: intelligent insights at scale, hyper-personalized experiences, enhanced productivity and innovation, and the shift to “search beyond SEO”, where generative search, AI assistants and answer engines now shape how customers discover and choose brands.
It also names four risks: gaps in trust and transparency, brand homogenization, bias and misinformation without proper governance, and new security challenges. On homogenization, Brand 21 warns that as more organizations rely on the same AI tools, content and messaging can start to sound identical, and brands that depend solely on AI-generated output risk losing the distinct voice and emotional resonance that set them apart.
“[Quote from Jaime Butler on homogenization and why differentiation matters more as AI spreads. For her review and approval.]” said Jaime Butler, Founder and Principal of Brand 21.
Brand 21’s perspective: AI is a force multiplier
Brand 21’s view is that AI is neither friend nor foe but a force multiplier. The firm recommends that leaders:
Treat AI as a brand and business imperative, not only a technology initiative.
Keep humans in the loop. AI processes information and finds patterns, while people bring empathy, judgment, creativity and ethics.
Build governance and transparency into how AI shapes the information, recommendations and decisions customers receive.
Optimize for discovery beyond traditional search, including AI-driven platforms that increasingly influence customer journeys and purchasing decisions.
Protect what is distinct: a clear purpose and authentic stakeholder engagement.
“In an AI-driven world, the brands that remain distinctly human will stand apart,” the study concludes.
