Business information rarely sits in one place. A policy may be stored in a document library, a customer record in a CRM and an operational update in a database. A language model cannot give a dependable answer about that information unless the application can find the relevant material and respect the organization’s access rules.
RAG connects a language model to approved information sources. When someone asks a question, the system retrieves relevant material before preparing a response. Ment Tech Labs’ development process puts particular attention on that retrieval step, where the quality of the source material can make or break the answer.
The first step is use-case mapping: identifying the questions the application should answer, who will use it and which sources it may access. Knowledge preparation follows, with documents and other business data cleaned, organized and divided into sections suitable for search.
Engineers then develop the retrieval layer. Depending on the data, it may use vector search, keyword search, metadata filters and reranking to select useful context. The next step connects that context to a language model and configures how the application handles citations and permissions.

Its teams review whether retrieval finds relevant material, whether responses are grounded in that material, how clearly sources are cited and how the system performs when information is missing. Deployment is followed by monitoring and further improvement.
