WEST SUMBA, EAST NUSA TENGGARA — September 20, 2026 — The Legal Aid Institute for Indigenous Peoples of the Archipelago (LBH MABN) has expressed appreciation for the humanitarian approach demonstrated by the West Sumba Police and senior officials of the East Nusa Tenggara Regional Police (Polda NTT) following a shooting incident.The appreciation was conveyed by Keba Pala Ndima, S.H., S.Pd., M.Pd., M.H., Head of the Legal Division of LBH MABN, following the visit by police officials to the home of the bereaved family to convey condolences and demonstrate empathy toward the affected community.
The condolence visit was led by West Sumba Police Chief AKBP Yohanis Nisa Pewali, S.S., M.H., accompanied by East Nusa Tenggara Police Intelligence Director Kombes Pol. Danang Kuswoyo, S.I.K., and Head of the East Nusa Tenggara Police Information and Communication Technology Division Kombes Pol. Yoseph Krisbiyanto, S.I.K.
Several senior officials of the West Sumba Police also attended the visit, along with representatives of the Loli Subdistrict Government and the local Village Government.
The victim was reportedly involved in a livestock theft case.
Appreciation for Regional Leadership
LBH MABN also expressed appreciation for the leadership of the West Sumba Police Chief as a native son of East Nusa Tenggara and the Sumba region. According to Keba Pala Ndima, leadership rooted in local understanding and community engagement can contribute to stronger communication between law enforcement institutions and residents.
The organization views the police presence at the bereaved family’s home as a demonstration of empathy and public service, particularly following an incident that has drawn concern within the local community.
“Direct engagement with the affected family can serve as an important step toward maintaining social harmony and strengthening public confidence in the law enforcement process,” Keba Pala Ndima said.
Support for Public Security and Community Order
LBH MABN also stated its support for community security and public-order programs (Kamtibmas) implemented by law enforcement authorities and local government in the region.
The organization said preventive security programs, community engagement and cooperation between authorities and residents are important components in efforts to prevent criminal activity and maintain public safety in West Sumba.
According to LBH MABN, maintaining security is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement agencies. Constructive cooperation involving government institutions, community leaders, legal organizations and residents can contribute to a stable and orderly environment.
LBH MABN emphasized that humanitarian engagement and preventive security measures can work together to strengthen relations between law enforcement authorities and communities, while supporting public confidence in the legal process.
The organization further encouraged continued communication between police authorities, local government and the community in addressing security concerns and preventing future criminal incidents in the region.
