APP DEV FOR ALL LAUNCHES "CODE ON THE GO," THE FIRST PROFESSIONAL-GRADE PHONE-NATIVE IDE

App Dev for All has released Code on the Go (CoGo), a free, open-source Android IDE that runs entirely on a phone or tablet, requiring no laptop, USB connection, or cloud server. CoGo includes a full code editor, on-device Gradle build system, debugger, and a computer vision feature that converts hand-drawn screen layouts into working code, and has already been used by a community member to build and publish a real app to the Google Play Store.

BELMONT, California — April 29, 2026 — App Dev for All today announced the Release 1 (R1) availability of Code on the Go, a free and open-source Android integrated development environment (IDE) that runs entirely on an Android phone or tablet.

Unlike traditional mobile development, which typically requires an expensive workstation and high-speed internet, Code on the Go empowers developers to write, build, and debug Android apps directly on an Android phone or tablet, without needing a laptop, remote desktop, or cloud-based IDE.

“Every professional Android development tool assumes you have a laptop or desktop computer on one end and a phone on the other. We wanted to know what happens when having a computer isn’t a barrier to entry anymore,” said David Schachter, App Dev for All’s founder. “For billions of people around the world, the phone is their only computer. We want to empower anyone, anywhere, to build the apps they want and need.”

What Code on the Go Is and Does
Code on the Go provides a complete Android development environment on-device: a code editor with real-time feedback for both Java and Kotlin, a project and file management system, a Gradle-based build system that compiles locally on the device without sending code to a remote server, and a full in-app debugger.

The environment includes a specialized interface and innovative features designed for small-screen productivity, including a “sketch-to-UI” system that uses computer vision to convert hand-drawn layouts into functional code. This eliminates the need for the complex, multi-window configurations found in desktop IDEs.

Code on the Go is built on an open-source foundation, ensuring that the tools for digital creation remain accessible to all.

Background and Pre-release
Code on the Go has been available to early adopters and beta testers since October 2025, and a community of developers has been actively using it to test out and build real applications during that period. Pre-release feedback directly shaped the features and improvements included in Release 1. R1 represents the project’s first production-ready release.

One example of an app built with Code on the Go during the pre-release period is Sriboard, built by Prabath Kumara using his phone as his only development environment. Sriboard is an enhanced Android keyboard designed for users who type in both Sinhala, a language of Sri Lanka, and English. “Here’s an app built entirely on a phone, solving a real problem, published in the Google Play Store,” said Schachter. “This is not a demo or a proof of concept. It’s a developer creating an app he wants and needs, using the tools he has: his phone and Code on the Go.”

In a Telegram message to the Code on the Go team, Kumara said “I owe this milestone entirely to your platform and your hard work. Thank you for empowering ordinary guys like me to achieve something this big right from our phones. You guys are literally changing lives!” (See the message at https://t.me/CodeOnTheGoDiscussions/3704.)
