Hostels with no vacancy: «El anillo de casado» and the secret map of a hidden love

Mike Sain't Louis writes about a man who wears a wedding ring and a love that has to live in borrowed rooms. «El anillo de casado» is playful on the surface and quietly heartbreaking underneath. Free to download from his official pages.

MADRID, Spain, October 25, 2026. Every city has two maps. One shows the avenues, the museums and the squares where families stroll on Sunday. The other is drawn by people who cannot love in the open: the side streets, the cheap rooms, the hours chosen because nobody will be around. In «El anillo de casado», Mike Sain't Louis, the Madrid-based lyricist, composer and music producer behind Planeta Gayfolk, traces that second map with humour and a surprising tenderness.

Five beers and a beginning

The song starts in the most ordinary place imaginable: a bar chain famous for small sandwiches, «los cien montaditos». Two men share «cinco jarras», five pints, «entre risas y miradas», between laughter and glances, «bien escondiditos», well hidden. The diminutives are typical of spoken Spanish and they give the opening a cosy, slightly tipsy warmth. The narrator admits he is «contentillo», a little merry, and says plainly what he wants: for the other man to come to bed and take off his ring.

That ring is the protagonist of the chorus. «Lleva el anillo de casado», he wears the wedding ring, «por siempre enamorado», forever in love, the lyric adds with a raised eyebrow. He has walked down the church aisle. Everyone has seen the ceremony. And yet here he is.

A confession in the bridge

What lifts the song beyond a cheeky anecdote is the bridge, where the narrator stops joking. «¿Y qué voy a hacer? No lo sé», what am I going to do? I don't know. «Con él estoy tan bien», I feel so good with him. «Me estoy empezando a enamorar de él», I am starting to fall for him. The adventure has become a feeling, and the feeling has nowhere to go.

He even names the trap with great precision: what holds him every day a little more is the other man's «supuesta heterosexualidad», his supposed heterosexuality. The word supuesta, supposed, carries the whole ironic weight of the song. Everybody plays a role; only the narrator seems to know the script is fiction.

The wedding and the telefonillo

The final verse places two images side by side. On one side, the official story: a church wedding, a bride in pure white, four hundred guests. On the other, the unofficial one: two men walking through Madrid «de discretos», discreetly, searching for hostels that do not have the sign «completos», no vacancy, hanging on the intercom. It is one of the most cinematic lines Mike has written, and it captures the absurd logistics of a love that has to look for a room every time.

Listeners who grew up queer in conservative environments, or who have been the secret of someone else's double life, will recognise the mixture of excitement and humiliation in that image. The song never moralises. It does not condemn the narrator, and it does not excuse the married man. It shows the situation and lets the listener feel the cost.

Lightness as a way of telling the truth

Musically and lyrically, «El anillo de casado» stays light. The chorus is catchy, the rhymes are playful, and the ending line, «si pasa por mi cama y lo disfruto para mí es pasado», if he passes through my bed and I enjoy it, for me it is the past, sounds at first as pure bravado. But after the bridge it reads differently: it is the narrator trying to convince himself that he can walk away.

That double reading is typical of Mike Sain't Louis. His comic songs tend to carry a second track of feeling, and the comedy is often what makes the feeling bearable.

A word on wellbeing

Living a hidden relationship can be lonely and exhausting, whether you are the one with the secret or the one kept in the shadows. If it starts to weigh on your mental health, reach out. In Spain, the 024 line is free and available at any hour; elsewhere, local helplines and LGBTQ+ support services can listen without judgement. Mike speaks publicly about his own treatment because asking for help should never be a source of shame.
