FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEBRONX, N.Y. — October 17, 2026 — Joseph L. Smith, the Harlem-born, Bronx-based author and filmmaker behind 17 Kings Entertainment, has released his first children's picture book, "Solay's First Day of School," now available on Amazon Kindle, with the paperback edition to follow.
The 31-page picture book follows Solay, a little girl who wakes up nervous about her first day of school. With Mom and Dad cheering her on, she finds new friends, lunchtime surprises, and a classroom full of joy — a warm, reassuring story for every child starting their own first day, and for the parents walking them to the door.
"I wrote Solay's story for every kid who ever felt butterflies on the first day — and for the parents who feel it too," said Smith. "If it helps one child walk into school brave, it did its job."
The release marks a new direction for Smith, who is best known as the author of the "Da Family" urban fiction trilogy — "Da Family: Loyalty Is Everything," "Da Family 2: Rise of a Queen," and "Da Family 3: If You're Not With Me You're Against Me" — and as the producer and director of the films "Loyalty" (2023) and "Loyalty 2: The Return of T Bone" (2024), both streaming free on Tubi.
