From Luwoo Village to the World: UNG’s PPK Ormawa Builds the BRIGHT Literacy Ecosystem Through National and International Collaboration

GORONTALO, INDONESIA – Under the guidance of Haris Danial, S.Pd., M.A., the Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa), implemented by the English Language Education Student Association of the Faculty of Letters and Culture, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG), is driving an innovative community empowerment initiative in Luwoo Village. The program demonstrates how student-led innovation, academic mentorship, local resources, and multi-stakeholder collaboration can contribute to sustainable community transformation.
Through its community empowerment program, the PPK Ormawa team has developed an integrated approach based on the real needs, challenges, and local potential of Luwoo Village. The program combines literacy, local economic development, health, environmental sustainability, and digital innovation to support the development of a Smart Village ecosystem.

A major strength of the program is the successful implementation of the Four BRIGHT Literacy Hubs: Bright Smart Center, Bright Eco-Market, Bright Life & Wellbeing, and Bright Green Tech. These four hubs are designed as an interconnected ecosystem rather than separate activities, allowing community empowerment initiatives to address multiple dimensions of village development.

The Bright Smart Center focuses on strengthening literacy and community learning. Meanwhile, Bright Eco-Market promotes the development of local economic potential through innovation and product diversification. One of its highlighted activities was training local communities to produce corn sticks and cakalang chili sauce, utilizing resources available in and around Luwoo Village.

The food processing training was strengthened by the involvement of Dr. Yoyanda Bait, S.TP., M.Si., an academic expert in food processing and agricultural product technology. Her participation provided scientific knowledge and practical guidance, helping participants understand how local resources can be transformed into innovative products with added economic value.

Through Bright Eco-Market, the program demonstrates a practical model of local economic empowerment: transforming local resources into community knowledge, innovative products, and potential economic opportunities. The development of corn sticks and cakalang chili sauce represents an important step toward encouraging product diversification and strengthening village-based entrepreneurship.

Environmental sustainability is another important component of the program through the Bright Green Tech Hub. Activities include the development and arrangement of an educational garden, compost production, and environmental awareness initiatives involving students and local community members.

The environmental program has also been strengthened through collaboration with CUACI (Curtin University Australia Alumnus Chapter Indonesian). The collaboration involved Prof. John, an expert in waste management and recycling, who contributed knowledge and perspectives on sustainable environmental practices. This partnership connects local environmental challenges with broader academic and international perspectives.

The PPK Ormawa program also places strong emphasis on community literacy and women's empowerment. Through collaboration with the Women’s School, the program creates opportunities for women to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and participation in community development. In addition, collaboration with RELIMA supports the development of literacy activities and strengthens the community learning ecosystem.

The program further addresses social challenges affecting young people. Through collaboration with the Telaga Police Sector, the PPK Ormawa team organized an Anti-Online Loan Workshop aimed at increasing awareness among young people about the risks of illegal online lending and digital financial exploitation.

In another important collaboration, the team worked with the National Narcotics Board (BNN) to organize an anti-drug awareness and education program. The activity aimed to strengthen young people's understanding of the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of prevention.

These collaborations demonstrate that the PPK Ormawa program extends beyond conventional community service. By integrating economic empowerment, literacy, environmental awareness, women's participation, digital safety, and social protection, the program provides a more comprehensive approach to community development.

One of the program's distinctive strengths is its commitment to sharing local experiences and innovations with wider academic communities. The implementation and outcomes of the program are also being disseminated through the International Conference on Education, Language, and Learning (ICELL). This demonstrates that community-based innovations developed in Luwoo Village can contribute to broader academic discussions and international knowledge exchange.

The success of the program is also supported by the active contribution of the student team. Students are directly involved in identifying community needs, planning activities, coordinating with partners, facilitating programs, documenting activities, and conducting monitoring and evaluation.

Their involvement goes beyond implementing activities. The students act as facilitators, innovators, communicators, and bridges between academic knowledge and community needs. Through this process, PPK Ormawa becomes an important platform for developing leadership, teamwork, communication, project management, and social responsibility.

The Four BRIGHT Literacy Hubs remain the central innovation of the program. Bright Smart Center strengthens literacy and learning, Bright Eco-Market develops local economic potential, Bright Life & Wellbeing promotes health and community wellbeing, and Bright Green Tech encourages environmental innovation and sustainable practices.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate how student organizations can transform a community empowerment proposal into a real and collaborative movement. The program brings together local communities, village government, youth organizations, women's groups, academics, literacy organizations, law enforcement institutions, environmental experts, and international networks.

From Luwoo Village, the PPK Ormawa team of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo demonstrates that meaningful community transformation begins by understanding local needs, optimizing local resources, and connecting communities with wider networks of knowledge, innovation, and collaboration. Through the Four BRIGHT Literacy Hubs, the program is helping build a more inclusive, innovative, resilient, and sustainable Smart Village ecosystem.
