«Entre cuatro paredes», Between Four Walls, and its companion «No me aparece una ilusión» describe a room the narrator cannot leave. Anyone who has lived through depression knows that room: the bed, the closed curtains, the phone, the sense that the door is very far away.
The fortress
In «Antisocial», the walls have a different meaning. The narrator calls his silence a castle. His world is small but unbreakable. The room here is a chosen refuge, a place to recover after too much exposure to people who did harm. Same four walls, opposite feeling.
The rented cell
«Tu mendigo» describes a room offered as a refuge that turns out to be a cell: a door opened with a borrowed key, a corner with a stained carpet, a silence full of self-interested friendship. The details reveal dependency. Nothing in the room belongs to the narrator, and so he can never truly rest there.
The hostel with no vacancy
«El anillo de casado» moves the action to the city. Two men search Madrid for hostels whose intercoms do not show the sign «completos», full. The room they need is temporary, anonymous and hard to find. The image captures the logistics of a hidden love, and the humiliation of always looking for somewhere to be together.
The room above the bar
«The Great Depression» imagines a room rented on Tuesday nights above a bar in 1929: one narrow space, a borrowed jar of sugar, a tie hanging on a kitchen hook. It is the most tender room in the catalogue, small and precarious but full of care. Outside, the landlord counts what is owed; inside, someone counts heartbeats.
The mirror opposite
«El espejo de enfrente» focuses on one object in a room: the mirror placed where it cannot be avoided. The room becomes a stage for self-judgement, every morning a new verdict.
What rooms reveal
