Father launches Sugar Pulse Science to investigate the unanswered causes of type 1 diabetes

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, October 20, 2026: Sugar Pulse Science, a patient-led research initiative founded by Oleg Pogozhev, is opening a public search for the causes of type 1 diabetes, with a special focus on the questions facing children and their families.

The initiative began with a family experience. Pogozhev's daughter lives with type 1 diabetes, a condition that turns ordinary days into a continuous cycle of glucose checks, insulin decisions, meals, school planning and overnight vigilance. The family is grateful for the technologies that make life safer, but believes that better treatment and prevention will also require a deeper understanding of how the disease begins.

Sugar Pulse Science is building a research dialogue with scientists, engineers and people affected by type 1 diabetes. Its public materials include early research work, a developing scientific roadmap and a move toward more detailed investigation. The initiative is not offering a treatment or a cure. Its purpose is to ask precise questions, examine evidence and help direct attention toward the origins of the disease.

The team follows public work in cell therapy and gene therapy by companies and research groups including Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Sernova, Seraxis and Sanofi. Those programmes are pursuing practical options for people who already live with type 1 diabetes. Sugar Pulse Science sees that work as important and complementary to its own question: what biological, environmental or immune events may create the conditions for the disease in the first place?

The initiative is also inspired by the determination of families who turn personal loss into organised research. In a public interview, Katie Beth Hand, known as Patient 9 in an Eledon programme, expressed a hope that has stayed with many families: children living with type 1 diabetes today should not have to live with it forever. That hope is a reason to support both careful treatment research and the search for causes.

Pogozhev says the initiative is currently financed by the family and does not yet have a formal foundation. Supporters can learn more, follow the research and help fund the next stage through the public support page.

About Sugar Pulse Science
Sugar Pulse Science is an independent, patient-led research initiative focused on understanding the causes of type 1 diabetes and supporting evidence-based scientific work. It works in public, separates research questions from medical promises and invites families, researchers and technical experts to follow its progress.
