BSCOBBER Shares Why It Chose to Return to Kickstarter Directly After a Difficult Past Campaign Experience

After fulfilling rewards from a previous campaign despite complications, the Chengdu-based manufacturer says the experience reshaped how it approaches communication, responsibility and customer relationships.

CHENGDU, China – September 22, 2026 – BSCOBBER, a Chengdu-based outdoor equipment brand focused on lightweight and practical products, is sharing the story behind its decision to manage its current Kickstarter campaign directly after a difficult experience with an earlier campaign handled with the assistance of an external agency.

The company says the experience changed the way it thinks about communication with backers and reinforced its belief that product creators should remain directly involved with the people who support their products.

Before BSCOBBER became a direct-to-consumer brand, the company worked with an external agency to launch one of its products on Kickstarter. According to BSCOBBER, the campaign was successfully funded, and the company had already manufactured the products as the manufacturer.

After the campaign, however, changes within the agency's team resulted in the company losing access to the Kickstarter account and the backer information needed to complete fulfillment, BSCOBBER said.

At the time, the team was still learning how Kickstarter campaigns operated and had relied on the agency to manage campaign communications and backer information.

A Difficult Situation After a Successful Campaign

When the company realized that it could no longer communicate normally with the agency, BSCOBBER says its team traveled to Shenzhen to locate the agency and recover the information it could.

The company eventually obtained the backer information it needed to proceed with fulfillment.

There was another complication: according to BSCOBBER, the company did not receive the campaign funds from the agency.

The products had already been manufactured, but the company says the funds associated with the campaign were no longer available to it.

Rather than leaving the situation unresolved, BSCOBBER decided to fulfill the rewards itself and absorb the resulting loss.

"Behind every pledge was a real person who had trusted the product," said Jasmine, Founder of BSCOBBER. "We did not want people who had supported our product to be left without it."

The company proceeded with shipments and also prepared an apology letter explaining the circumstances and the extended waiting period to affected backers.

For BSCOBBER, the decision was not only about completing a shipment. The company says it was also about recognizing the relationship between a manufacturer and the people who had supported its product before receiving it.

Continuing to Address Unresolved Cases

BSCOBBER says the original Kickstarter campaign remains publicly accessible, and that comments indicate many backers eventually received their rewards.

At the same time, the company says it has also seen comments from a small number of people who reported that they may not have received their rewards.

Because BSCOBBER did not have access to the original Kickstarter account or a complete backer list, the company says it was unable to independently verify every order from that campaign.

The company is now inviting people who believe they were affected to contact BSCOBBER directly.

Potentially affected backers can email jasmine@bscobber.com with the subject line "Original Kickstarter Reward" and provide their name, shipping address, and any available order or pledge information.

According to BSCOBBER, once an order can be verified, the company will arrange a replacement shipment at no cost to the affected backer.

Why BSCOBBER Chose to Run Kickstarter Directly

The experience ultimately influenced how BSCOBBER wanted to operate as a brand.

The company says it wants to maintain a more direct relationship between product development, manufacturing and customers instead of relying on unnecessary layers between the people making a product and the people supporting it.

That philosophy is reflected in BSCOBBER's current Kickstarter campaign for OmniPump-1, a compact 10-in-1 portable inflator designed for cycling, vehicles, camping, sports equipment and other outdoor inflation needs.

Rather than having an external agency serve as the primary connection between the company and its backers, BSCOBBER is managing the campaign itself and communicating directly with the Kickstarter community.

"We want to design our products, manufacture them, listen to our customers, and stand behind what we make," Jasmine said. "We want to know the people who support our products — and we want them to know the people who build them."

BSCOBBER says the direct approach also gives the company an opportunity to receive feedback earlier in the product development process. Questions, suggestions and criticism from users can help the team identify areas for improvement as it develops future products.

The company acknowledges that it is still learning as a direct-to-consumer brand, but says that maintaining a direct relationship with customers is an important part of how it intends to grow.

Its current Kickstarter campaign for BSCOBBER OmniPump-1 is now being managed directly by the company.
