Bristol ADHD clinic launches £30 a month prescribing service for adults left without shared care

Attention to Health, the CQC regulated adult ADHD clinic based in Henleaze, Bristol, has launched an ongoing prescribing service for adults across the UK whose GP will not or cannot take over their ADHD medication.

The service costs from £30 a month by direct debit. Patients complete a short online questionnaire each month, which the clinic's specialist team uses to confirm that their medication is still working and still safe. Where it is, a prescription is issued without an appointment and the medication is arranged for delivery to the patient's home. Two 50 minute clinical reviews a year are included.

The launch responds to a problem that has grown steadily for adults diagnosed with ADHD. Shared care, the arrangement under which a GP takes over prescribing once a specialist has established a stable dose, is voluntary. GP practices are not obliged to accept it, a number decline it, and some have withdrawn from agreements they previously held. Adults affected are left either paying for a private follow up appointment every time they need a prescription, or facing an interruption to medication that is working.

"Once your ADHD medication is working well, getting your prescription should not be complicated," said Dr Will Kenny-Levick, GP and director at Attention to Health. "The clinical question each month is a small one. What our patients kept telling us was that the administration around it was not small at all, particularly when their GP had declined shared care. We wanted to build something that was safe, reliable and affordable, and that asked as little of the patient as possible."

The monthly questionnaire is a clinical check rather than an administrative one. Where a patient reports a change, a side effect or a problem, the clinic arranges to speak with them rather than issuing a further prescription.

"The check matters more than the convenience," said Dr Kenny-Levick. "If something has changed, that is a conversation, not a form. The point of asking every month is that we find out."

The subscription is paid by direct debit and can be cancelled at any time, with no contract and no cancellation fee. Patients who later secure a shared care agreement with their GP can simply stop.

The service is open to adults who are already stable on ADHD medication, whether they were diagnosed by Attention to Health or elsewhere. Patients diagnosed by another provider can join following a transfer of care consultation. Adults who have not yet been assessed, or whose dose is still being adjusted, are directed to assessment or titration first.

Attention to Health works with adults across the UK online and prescribes in line with NICE guideline NG87 and UKAAN standards. Its clinicians are registered with the GMC and HCPC and the clinic is regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
