Glasgow, Scotland - Scottish businesses with Azure Reserved Instances and savings plans could face surprise cost increases when their contracts renew, Riverbank IT Systems has warned, following Microsoft's announcement of VM series retirements and approximately 25% price increases on older virtual machines.Microsoft confirmed that Dv3, Dsv3, Ev3 and Esv3 virtual machines retire on 15 November 2029, while prices for v1 series (Bv1, D, Ds, F, Fs, G, Gs, Ls, NP, HC) and v2 series (Av2, Amv2, Dv2, Dsv2, Fsv2, Lsv2) rise approximately 25% from 1 February 2027 across pay-as-you-go, Enterprise Agreement and Microsoft Customer Agreement rates.
Crucially, existing Reserved Instance contracts are only protected until their term ends. When an RI expires, usage reverts to the new pay-as-you-go pricing - even if auto-renew is enabled. Savings plans covering affected VM families will also reflect the updated rates as underlying prices change.
"Businesses think a Reserved Instance or savings plan locks their price forever - it doesn't," said Timothy A., founder of Riverbank IT Systems. "When your RI term ends, you land on the new rate. If that VM series has just gone up 25%, that's when the bill shock hits. Check your renewal dates now."
