With Georgia going through a statewide Level 1 Drought Response, AHC Landscape Supply is encouraging homeowners to prepare their landscapes for dry conditions by paying closer attention to soil, mulch, watering habits, and plant selection.The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has maintained the statewide Level 1 drought response since declaring it in April. The response requires public water systems to educate residents about drought and water conservation. While recent rainfall has improved conditions in some areas, drought and abnormal dryness continue to affect parts of Georgia.
“An extended arid period can put a lot of stress on a landscape, but preparing for it is not very complicated,” said Chris Anderson of AHC Landscape Supply. “The way you manage your yard or garden, protect moisture, and water your plants, directly impacts the soil quality.”
According to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, simple landscape practices can help plants handle dry conditions more effectively. UGA recommends maintaining about three inches of mulch in planting beds because mulch helps retain soil moisture, reduce evaporation, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperatures. It also recommends keeping mulch a few inches away from tree and shrub trunks.
Soil condition also matters. Compacted soil can make it harder for water to move into the root zone, while appropriate soil preparation and organic amendments can improve the way soil handles water. UGA's water-wise landscape guidance recommends addressing compacted soil and using suitable soil improvements rather than relying on irrigation alone.
Watering practices can make an equally important difference. UGA proposes watering deeply enough to moisten soil at least eight inches below the surface when irrigation is needed. Homeowners should also adjust irrigation after rainfall, avoid overwatering, and use shorter watering cycles when water begins running off instead of soaking into the soil. Drip irrigation can help deliver water closer to plant roots while reducing evaporation.
Long-term planning can help, too. UGA advises matching plants to site conditions such as sunlight, soil type, and drainage and incorporating native and drought-tolerant plants suited to Georgia's climate.
“People often think preparing for drought means simply watering more,” Chris Anderson said. “A better approach is to help the landscape fully utilise the water it already receives.”
