FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEOLNEY, Ill. (Oct. 4, 2026) - Aerostratospheric, an Illinois nonprofit corporation, has published its planned 2027 science flights on the public Flights schedule at midwestsds.com. Two science flights from Casey, Illinois are listed for 2027: an X2Griffon Science Flight on March 27, 2027, and an x1Albatross Science Flight on June 12, 2027. Both dates are planning targets and may change with weather, airspace, and readiness.
X2Griffon, March 27, 2027
The schedule lists the March 27 flight as a planned spring profile from Casey. X2Griffon is Aerostratospheric's flagship stratospheric platform, built for vertical profiles of temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind shear, with parachute recovery and the xFall2 failsafe black box flown on every mission. On its maiden science flight on September 19, 2026, X2Griffon burst at 90,356 ft.
x1Albatross, June 12, 2027
The schedule lists the June 12 flight as a mid-altitude jetstream drift. x1Albatross is Aerostratospheric's mid-altitude jetstream drift platform. Its long-term goal is multi-day observations that complement X2Griffon's vertical profiles. An x1Albatross envelope check flew on September 12, 2026, when a 100-gram latex balloon carrying a simulated x1Albatross payload burst at 59,000 ft. That flight was a trajectory and envelope check, not the operational long-duration x1Albatross.
Readiness steps on the same schedule
The schedule also lists the ground and test work leading to these flights: a dry-flight computer simulation on October 24, 2026; a recovery and BLE hunt drill on November 14, 2026; a cold-chamber sensor run on January 16, 2027; a fill-and-burst envelope simulation on April 18, 2027; a radio link simulation on May 9, 2027; and an ops test flight on July 17, 2027.
Following the flights
Aerostratospheric launches are private science operations, and flight results are shared publicly for awareness and education. During missions, the public can follow live tracking on xLiveFlights and APRS.fi. Aerostratospheric aims to release science flight data within about 48 hours after recovery, and flight records are published through UOGW (Unified Open Global Weather) on xDataHub. Researchers, educators, and partners interested in flight data reuse or collaboration can book a short conversation at https://calendly.com/aerostratospheric/15min.
