WASHINGTON, DC, November 7, 2026 — William Aaron Turner of Infinitum Corporation® has published a strategic analysis paper, "Can't Beat Them, Join Them?: The Adversarial Mirror Ratchet™," which examines adaptation, terror, intelligence and escalation in the networked age.The paper introduces the Adversarial Mirror Ratchet™, a term coined by Turner. It describes "a reciprocal process in which actors copy an adversary's perceived methods, treat the copied method as a new minimum, and justify further escalation as necessary to recover advantage." According to the paper, the mechanism can operate through force, intelligence, institutional secrecy and public communication, and each round can make the next appear less exceptional.
The paper separates two meanings of "can't beat them, join them": learning from an opponent, and abandoning one's own standards. "History supports the necessity of adaptation. It does not establish the necessity of unlimited imitation," Turner writes.
Drawing on terrorism scholarship, including Kydd and Walter's 2006 study "The Strategies of Terrorism," the paper notes that a violent organization may want an opponent to overreact, and that "one-upping" the enemy may complete the enemy's strategy rather than defeat it. Historical cases examined include Algeria, Chechnya, Sri Lanka in 2009 and the Phoenix program. The paper concludes that these cases "demonstrate neither universal failure nor universal success of force," but show the inadequacy of "more ruthless" as a complete theory of victory.
A modern section examines how social media, continuous news cycles, psychological operations and Reflexive Control Theory shape decision premises and accelerate escalation, and links this to Turner's earlier EchoForm™ work. It cautions that platform design can shape exposure and expression, but that downstream belief and behavior require separate evidence.
"You do not defeat an adaptive opponent by refusing to understand him. You also do not defeat him merely by becoming him," Turner writes. The paper closes: "understand the enemy deeply enough to prevent him from becoming the author of your decisions."
The paper takes no side and is presented as strategic analysis, not a manual for violence, targeting or disinformation. The proposed term is described as an analytical synthesis, not a validated predictive theory.
